It's Lonely in the Metaverse
Four artists created an audiovisual participatory exhibition at the Rapla County Centre for Contemporary Art, exploring the metaverse as an emerging spatial and virtual medium. Widely promoted through hype-driven narratives of new social and economic possibilities, these virtual worlds often revealed a different reality. Behind the promises, they appeared sparse, isolating, and shaped by limited interaction and speculative systems. "It’s Lonely in the Metaverse" reflects on this contrast, tracing the gap between the marketed vision of digital futures and the environments that quietly exist alongside it. Besides the room installation, each artist prepared a VR loop video; I made one titled "Waiting Room", which mimicked an endlessly ongoing state of waiting, with advertisement and voice announcements playing in the background.
